Greek Mythology and Greek myths are filled with an impressive array of Greek heroes, each one having his or her own story to tell. These mythological figures, are unique and very distinctive in their own right. The English word hero comes from the Greek word heroas (iroas, ήρωας).
While I use Aragon as an example throughout this article, the characteristics described here precede Tolkien by many centuries. In fact, these characteristics can be identified in many of the heroes of Greek mythology, as well as the mythologies of other cultures. Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces offers a good overview of this.

If a hero is properly defined as somebody who does something dangerous to help somebody else, then the heroes of Greek mythology do not qualify. They were a pretty selfish bunch, often with additional antisocial tendencies thrown into the bargain--in other words, not exactly role models for the younger generation of today.

Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite in Greek mythology, who lived in a tower in Sestos, on the western shores of the Hellespont. She fell in love with Leander, a young man from Abydos, which was located on the eastern shores of the strait.
